Born in Farmington, Maine, Jan Bell went to nursing school and started working in Connecticut. She got married, started a family and then moved back to Maine to work in staff and leadership positions. She received her baccalaureate degree while working in her profession. Her story reflected her practice in a community hospital in rural Maine:
I worked and did my training at a thousand-bed hospital in Hartford, Connecticut. I entered nursing school in 1972. I came from my hometown of Farmington, Maine, and went to the big city. Of course, that was culture shock. I grew up on a farm, and we didnât have a lot financially. We had grown up with small financial resources, so we appreciated everything we had. We only got to go to town once in awhile, so here I go to the city to go to nursing school.
I came across my school bills not too long ago when I was going through some papers. I think, collectively for the three years, it was maybe $2,600. My mom had gotten some financial assistance. Because we werenât financially endowed, we qualified for some support. Then, between my freshman and sophomore year, when I came home for the summerâbecause we did have summers offâmy mother entered me in the Maine Broiler Queen Festival because they offered a $400 scholarship. Now, she did all of this without my knowledge and told me when I got home, âOh, by the way, Iâve entered you in the Maine State Broiler Queen Festival.â I about died. I went down to Belfast, Maine. It was at the end of June when they had their broiler festival, and I did end up winning. There were fifteen of us, and I won. So I helped tuition that year by getting a $400 scholarship.
I was dating a man when I was at the end of my senior year in high school, and he was from Farmington as well. In my senior year of nursing school, he decided to move to Connecticut, and he started working at the University of Connecticut at Storrs. Because he did that, we said, âLetâs just stay in Connecticut after we get married.â I stayed down there for seven years. I worked at the hospital that I had graduated from. He wanted to come back and be a farmer. In the meantime, we had had three children. We moved back, and I became the nurse manager on a medical-surgical unit. I was only twenty-eight years old. I think back on that because today, to think somebody with only that many years of experience [could] become a manager, itâs kind of daunting. âWhat was I thinking?â But I was an assistant manager at Hartford Hospital. I guess Iâve been one of those people that was a leader. I am a first born, always telling my brothers and sisters what to do. I just gravitated always toward leadership roles.
Bell worked in the emergency room for ten years and was profoundly affected by patients and families with whom she worked.
